SATURDAY, 15TH SEPTEMBER

12.00 noon – 12.45pm – Talk and book launch

There will be a talk by the Provost-Elect Neil Mendoza, who will discuss the Mendoza Review. The review set out to answer the question: ‘What can government do to assist in creating and maintaining a thriving, sustainable and effective museum sector in Britain?’

You can read the review in full here, and find some sector responses here.

Furthermore former College Lecturer Dr John Stevenson will be launching his new book A Provost’s War, that he has written with the help of the College Archivist Rob Petre.

The short book contains a collection of the letters received by Provost Phelps during the Great War. With over 700 Oriel men in the forces during the conflict and 163 deaths, Provost Phelps had the unenviable task of writing many letters of condolences and helpfully passing on information from his numerous correspondents to grieving relatives – knitting Oriel’s community together. He also played an important role in Oxford, for many years as a city councillor and latterly an alderman.

1.00 – 2.30pm: Lunch in the Champneys Room
